Peng Xu
Professor Doctoral Supervisor
Professor Xu has been working on the research of HVAC systems for many years. His team is applying new technologies such as big data techniques and artificial intelligence to this traditional field, hoping to enhance HVAC design and building performance .
Education
BSc (1988-1992) HVAC Engineering, Tianjin University, China;
MEng(1992-1995),Thermal Engineering, Tongji University, China;
PhD(1997-2001),University of Colorado,Civil Engineering;
Work Experience
2001-2009,Scientist,Lawrence Berkeley national laboratory;
2010- Now,Professor, Tongji University;
Social Work
2006-Now,Chairman of ASHRAE intelligent building systems committee;Cooperative professor of automatic control department,Shandong university; Beijing energy conservation center foreign experts; Member of the expert committee of China low carbon association,Editorial board member of the ISO building carbon emission measurement standards committee, etc.In 2021, Professor Peng Xu became the the fellow of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA).
Research
Professor Xu's main research areas are building HVAC systems design, building system commissioning, energy retrofitting, building system control and monitoring, and building energy simulation. During his tenure as chairman of the ASHRAE Smart Building System Technical Committee, Xu Peng hosted a research project on communication control between buildings and smart grid interfaces. He organized and led a research project on building demand response control by a number of universities, including Purdue University and the University of California at Berkeley. He also developed a software that calculates the thermal inertia of building dynamics and estimate building demand response potentials. With the support of the U.S. National Natural Science Foundation, he developed a building control virtual system to optimize system fault diagnosis and control. After returning to Tongji University, Xu Peng was responsible for several research projects sponsored by the Ministry of Construction and the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, in the area of building demand response control, next generation building simulation methods, and automated HVAC design.
